This index is not a Nashville roundup. BBB posts one corporate complaint file on the headquarters page and says that file covers the headquarters and the other corporate offices. Customers write in from across the United States. The bureau often redacts the state, so a missing state is not a clean record.
United States, in one list
Snapshots of that file have shown about 326 to 351 complaints in three years. These are the patterns on the pages, then the states the text actually names.
01
Claims go quiet
Most pages of the corporate file are “Service or Repair” complaints: an adjuster does not call, a total-loss offer stalls, a rental clock runs out, or a third party cannot get a human. Samples run from 2024 through August 2026.
02
The second bill is not the quote
Filers describe a price that moves after they bind: $66 to more than $600, a quote that tripled after a Social Security number, a second month doubled for an excluded driver, and a “city rate revision” the company would not document.
03
Cancel, then a balance
People report a $29 balance sent toward collections after a lapse, a $729 bill after they tried to drop a scrapped car, a $1,600 reinstatement demand, and short policies that still produced a collector.
04
The state never gets the proof
SR-22 and DMV filings show up by name in Illinois and Indiana, and in at least two complaints where BBB redacted the state. One 2026 complaint says a wrong VIN suspended a registration.
05
The other driver is stuck too
People hit by a General customer file the same silence. One November 2025 complaint cites Florida motor-vehicle law. An August 2025 complaint asks Pennsylvania’s insurance department about prompt payment.
August 12, 2025 complaint: no adjuster for 15 days after a July 28 crash, and a request that the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance review prompt payment.
July 22, 2025 complaint: SR-22 proof was not sent to the Illinois Secretary of State. A separate complaint shows an Illinois-style policy number on a nonpayment cancel.
A filer says the certificate from a claim dated November 20, 2022 was never sent to the Indiana BMV, and the dispute was still open when they wrote BBB.
A BBB review thread involves a move between Georgia and North Carolina. The company’s reply says a North Carolina address change stopped a Georgia renewal offer.
No separate complaint total. BBB lists corporate offices in Valley View, Parma, and Akron. Complaints about those offices are rolled into the same national file.
On the pages we could read, BBB stripped the state from most complaints, including SR-22 suspensions and a complaint someone also sent to a department of insurance. Absence from this list is not a clean record.
Posted on Trustpilot as an unprompted review. The writer says a short policy change moved a $97 quote to a $129 renewal after a $32 charge, that agents repeated “this is your offer, it can change anytime,” and that a switch to Progressive saved about $500 a year. The General replied on the thread.
February 24, 2026 thread on r/Insurance. The original post was later deleted. Comments describe a claim closed the same day it was checked, three calls that reached only voicemail, and regulars telling the family to expect many more calls and to escalate past the assigned adjuster. That is forum advice, not a regulator finding.
Another state, name redacted: SR-22 missing, license suspended
BBB complaint dated December 29, 2025, answered. The filer says the DMV reported that The General did not send proof of insurance “in the correct, federally mandated way,” the license was suspended, and the refund did not cover the extra cost. BBB removed the state name.
BBB complaint dated December 28, 2025, answered, filed as a customer-service issue. The filer says the price tripled once a Social Security number was provided, and raises data-sharing and credit-reporting concerns. No state is printed.
Premium climbed with a clean record, then collections
BBB review. She wrote she would not give a star if she had the choice. After finding another insurer she says she could not find a way to cancel, the premium kept rising with no tickets or incidents, a missed payment canceled coverage, and they still billed a month she says she was not covered for — then collections.
Florida: a claim the filer says state law required them to pay
BBB complaint filed November 24, 2025, type Service or Repair, marked answered on December 8, 2025. The filer writes that the company “goes against Florida motor vehicle laws” to avoid paying a claim. This is an allegation on the national corporate file, not a Florida-only BBB office.
BBB complaint. The filer says a June 2025 crash in a 2020 Jaguar was a total loss and that by November there was still no settlement. The public complaint text describes the dispute as unanswered on the page where it was captured.
BBB complaint dated around the October 29, 2025 crash. The filer says they were at fault, carried full coverage, and never once spoke with the assigned representative. Voicemails to the rep, a manager, and the app-listed adjuster went unanswered, while a 30-day rental limit was about to run out.
BBB review from a third-party claimant. She says the other driver was found at fault for failure to yield on August 20, 2025, and the only number she had was a claims representative who did not answer or return messages. She wrote that a negative review seemed to be the only way to get a call.
October 14 crash, complaint over how the claim was handled
BBB complaint about claim handling after an accident on October 14, 2025. The filer describes the dispute as a failure to move the claim. The page labeled the matter in the unanswered category when it was indexed.
BBB review answered by the company on October 13, 2025. The customer says the claim department was rude, cut them off, and said calls were made that were not. The review asks the company not to take the job if it will not help.
Thirty days after a crash involving a baby, still no adjuster
BBB review from someone who is not a policyholder. She says the driver who hit her and her baby was insured by The General, and after more than 30 days the claims representative had not called despite voicemails, texts the rep had requested, and emails.
BBB review. She says the claim was closed with no rental, the truck still unrepaired, and no contact for three weeks. The company posted a reply on the BBB page four days later.
BBB review. The writer says the policy started a little over $200 and seemed fine until two weeks later, when billing jumped by an additional $200-plus. A requested refund was not issued. An invoice arrived instead, with a due date the writer says they never expected that soon.
From $66 to more than $600, then a fight to cancel
BBB complaint dated August 15, 2025, later marked resolved. The filer says the bill moved from $66 to $377 and then past $600, three calls on August 14 did not cancel it the same day, and a last call on August 16 left $6.87 still owed.
Pennsylvania: fifteen days, no adjuster, a call for the state DOI
BBB complaint dated August 12, 2025, answered. After a July 28, 2025 crash the filer says the adjuster was silent for more than 15 days, holding up the estimate and a rental extension, and asks the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance to look at prompt-payment rules.
Illinois: SR-22 never reached the Secretary of State
BBB complaint dated July 22, 2025, answered. The filer says payments were current and The General still did not send SR-22 proof to the Illinois Secretary of State.
BBB complaint dated July 14, 2025, answered. The filer says the premium doubled because proof of a no-fault accident was not processed, the policy lapsed, and reinstatement cost extra with no refund.
Insurify verified review from North Carolina. Jane says she has been with The General for several years and that one claim was handled about average. The complaint is price: the monthly payment for two vehicles climbed until it was almost $600.
BBB complaint asking for a reissue of a claim check of $2,491.83 originally issued September 7, 2022, for a July 20, 2022 crash. The filer says the check went stale and later attempts to reach the company for a replacement did not resolve it.
Told the balance was zero. Then collections, then a lapse.
Comment on the same May 2025 thread. The writer says a representative said nothing was owed at cancellation, a later $360 debit was reversed, collections still called, they paid, and the DMV was then told the policy had lapsed. They say staff blamed the reversal.
Public Reddit post, May 13, 2025. The writer says the bill moved from $193 to $293 to $710 without notice, a quote on a new car was refused, and after canceling they were billed $455 for half a month and told it was going to collections. They say the Pennsylvania DMV later showed zero points, contrary to what a representative had listed.
BBB complaint from a person hit on May 9, 2025 by a driver they say was insured by The General. They report calling, emailing claims, and sending the police report that named the other driver at fault, without a workable response.
Out of work, told to wait 48 hours, then hung up on
BBB complaint. The writer says the other car was repaired and their own car might not be drivable. On day two of missed work, a call-center employee repeated that the company had 48 hours and ended the call.
BBB complaint from a driver rear-ended by someone insured with the company. They say the phone system, including automated routing, sent them to the wrong department even after they confirmed the destination, and that the assigned claims contact did not help.
BBB complaint. The filer says his wife’s February 13, 2025 crash led to a two-week hospitalization and that he was working with a named adjuster on the vehicle repair without the file moving at the pace the injury required.
Public Reddit post, January 16, 2025. The writer says the first month was paid, a letter raised the premium sharply, they bought coverage elsewhere and canceled, and months later a $591 balance was sent to collections. Commenters note state rules about proof of new insurance. The poster says the new policy was in force before the cancel call.
BBB complaint. The filer says the deductible was eventually put back to $500 after agents and family members changed the policy without authorization. They say accusations followed, calls were ended, and requests for recordings and a manager callback stalled.
BBB complaint about an October 22, 2024 crash. Four airbags deployed. The filer says the adjuster called the car a total and promised answers the next day. The complaint is that the answers did not come.
BBB complaint. The writer says the car was hit in July and only later reached a shop, that the adjuster would not answer the body shop, and that rental was refused. They describe the repair as something they did not want rushed just to close the file.
BBB complaint. The filer says they bought a 2008 Yukon on September 30, 2024 and basic liability through The General, filed a claim the same day, and were told there was no collision coverage and the claim was denied. A later supervisor search of the policy is part of the dispute they filed.
Indiana: a BMV filing the filer says never went out
On the BBB corporate file, a filer says The General did not submit the certificate from a claim to the Indiana BMV. The filing they cite is dated November 20, 2022, and they say the back-and-forth was still unresolved when they complained. The complaint’s own post date is not printed in the excerpt.
