COMPLAINTS

File it where someone has authority

A tweet will not move a claim. Your state insurance department can. Write the facts once, then send that same account to the regulator, the BBB, and — if a collector or a false ad is involved — the CFPB or the FTC.

  1. STEP 1

Save the quote, the declarations page, and the cancel or claim number.

  2. STEP 2

Write dates, not adjectives. Who you called, what they said, what the bill did.

  3. STEP 3

Send it to your state department of insurance before you argue with a call center.

Draft the letter

[Your name]
Texas

To the consumer complaint unit:

I am filing a complaint about The General Automobile Insurance Services, Inc. (thegeneral.com), a nonstandard auto insurance agency. The company describes itself as a subsidiary of Sentry Insurance. This complaint is about my own experience, not a request for legal advice.

Policy or claim number: [policy or claim number]
Issue: Premium jumped after the quote or at renewal

What happened:
[What happened, in dates.]

What I am asking the company to do:
[What you want: the claim paid, the balance wiped, a cancellation confirmation, a corrected DMV filing.]

I have kept (or am attaching) the quote, declarations page, billing statements, cancellation confirmation, claim number, and any call notes I have. Please require a written response that addresses the facts above.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

State department of insurance

This is the regulator that can actually lean on an auto insurer. File here first. Direct forms are linked for states we confirmed. Everyone else starts at the NAIC directory and picks their state.

Better Business Bureau

BBB keeps one corporate complaint file for The General. It is posted on the Nashville headquarters profile and covers customers across the United States, plus the other listed offices. A BBB complaint is not a lawsuit. It does put the company’s reply, or its silence, on the record.

Your state attorney general

Use this when the problem is a deceptive price, a billing practice, or a collector — consumer protection, not the claims manual. USA.gov routes you to the right state office.

Federal Trade Commission

ReportFraud.ftc.gov is the right door if the advertising itself misled you: a quote that was never the product, a discount that did not exist, a coverage promise that was not on the policy.

Report it to the FTC

CFPB, only if credit is involved

Auto insurance is not a CFPB product. A collector or a credit-report error after a disputed balance is. File there in addition to the state insurance department, not instead of it.

NAIC consumer guide

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners explains what a complaint can and cannot do. They do not pay your claim. Your state does the enforcement.
