THE PUBLIC RECORD · AUTO INSURANCE

The low rate is the ad. The complaint file is the record.

The General sells nonstandard car insurance in a forest-green campaign about “a break.” State complaint math, repair-shop grades, and hundreds of public complaints describe something narrower: price shocks, quiet claim files, and bills after you cancel.

DO NOT QUOTE THEM

Shop a carrier people actually rate.

The biggest books in the country are State Farm, Progressive, GEICO, and Allstate, then USAA, Farmers, and Liberty Mutual. If one declines you, quote the next one the same day. Never The General.

IF YOU ARE STUCK

The state insurance department is the real regulator.

Auto insurance is state-regulated. Start with your department of insurance, then BBB, your attorney general, and the FTC if the advertising itself was the problem.
